Gloucestershire Women chomping at bit to chase another double, insists Henson- Green. ELATED local football volunteer Sue Henson- Green is backing jubilant Gloucestershire FA Women to go on and secure more double- winning successes in years to come. The chair of the county association’s county match committee is optimistic that this year’s South & West Counties Championship title- winning feat, which came hard on the heels of an Inter- County Tournament triumph at their Oaklands Park base in Almondsbury against league rivals Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire and Devon, can be repeated in 2. Beating Devon as we did (1. Sue enthused.“It was hard finishing up as runners- up by only two points to them last season and I well recall our captain Ashleigh Parsons turning to me and saying, ‘We’re going to be going for the double next year.“It was a view echoed by the other players too and as we’ve just seen, they’ve gone on and achieved it this time and the managers, Steve Lilley and Calum Wands, and all the players have been brilliant.”Sue said of the back- up the team had been given: “It’s not just about on the pitch but off it too and it’s a credit to everyone behind the scenes that our players have come so far.“We also won the Inter- County Tournament at the Gloucestershire FA in June, which is a one- day competition involving our South West league compatriots organised and instigated initially a few years ago by Alexis Lunn- Gadd, who is women’s football development officer at the GFA.“Again we went through the day unbeaten but it’s great to see how much the other counties who come down to Oaklands Park to take part love the tournament and the facilities at the GFA.“I’m sure they’re all looking forward to next season every bit as much as we are as we look to try and keep our title and go for another double.”Trophy and medals will be handed to Gloucestershire Women by league chairman David Grainge at a presentation evening at Chipping Sodbury Town FC on Thursday, September 2. Stars of the world stage: Gloucestershire greats Blackwell and Rutter hit CP heights. TWO true stars of Gloucestershire football have been celebrating an “amazing experience” in Argentina, even if their hopes of ultimate success were denied them, reports Simon Parkinson. James Blackwell, a full- back with County League team Kingswood, and Jack Rutter, a one- time Birmingham City prodigy who performs as an attacking midfielder with Hellenic League Lydney Town, have been featuring for England Cerebral Palsy (CP) team in the seven- a- side CP World Championships. The duo were part of a national side taking the group stages by storm with thumping 1. Japan, Venezuela and Holland respectively, before bouncing back from a goal down to overcome USA 2- 1 in the last eight and set up a dream semi- final appearance against a strong Iran outfit. Rutter’s surging run and unerring right- foot finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the box in that quarters showdown with the States was enough to see them to that last- four tie in the picturesque town of San Luis in central Argentina, an “unforgettable experience” according to Blackwell, despite the disappointment of a 3- 1 defeat. The 3. 1- year- old enthused: “It’s the first time we as a country have ever reached the semis at these championships and it’s been an amazing experience.“The setting in San Luis is stunning and playing in traditional South American stadiums against the world’s best has been wonderful and memorable.“We even visited a local school which was a very humbling experience as it seemed to mean so much for the kids there to meet us.“As a nation we’ve shown how far we’ve come to be challenging for a top- four finish to such a prestigious tournament against professional, full- time athletes.”Blackwell was born with a condition which affects the movement and flexibility of muscles down the entire left side of his body. His Cerebral Palsy (CP) diagnosis as a youngster came with a stark warning to his devoted parents that their son might never walk. In more recent times he suffered what was deemed by specialists as “life- threatening injuries” in a County League Cup tie against Patchway Town when a heavy fall left him with a broken neck and spinal cord damage. Blackwell and his county compatriot Rutter have both battled through physical and mental traumas to find themselves on the cusp of bronze medal joy, as a third- place play- off tussle with Russia was due to be confronted on Saturday, September 2. I’ve played in every game in the tournament so far, mainly from the bench which is partly down to tactics,” Blackwell explained. I’m looked at to come on and help see games out or to try and add more goals as it’s very demanding compared with 1. But I’ve scored a goal at the tournament and set a few up so I’m satisfied enough!” As for Rutter, he continues to perform at a high level of standard semi- pro football with Lydney in the Hellenic Premier, despite having suffered brain damage and permanent loss of hearing in his right ear after being set upon in an unprovoked attack in Gloucester one night as an 1. The player has skippered England CP for the past four years and he glowed: “It’s been a brilliant tournament in a great location and the hotel we are in is unbelievable. And stadiums are of an okay standard too.“We got off to a flyer in the group stages and we showed great character to come back from 1- 0 down against the US, who are a well drilled, strong, quick and fit side, and win through.“Iran took their chances in the semi- final and we didn’t, simple as. But the progression is there for all to see,” insisted the UEFA B licensed coach, who is a mentor for the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and head of disability football for Mc. Donald’s’ Play Better programme, not to mention a coach at University of Gloucestershire. More about Jack Rutter can be found at: jackrutterskillsschool. Lilley so proud as Gloucestershire FA Women bounce back to claim prized double STEVE Lilley reflected on a superb season for Gloucestershire FA Women on the inter- county representative stage and glowed: “Our players should be immensely proud of what they’ve achieved”. An 1. 1- 0 victory over Devon at Oaklands Park assured the gallant Glos girls the 2. South & West Counties Championship crown at the expense of opponents who, had they instead prevailed on the evening, might yet have snatched the title from under the noses of their hosts with a game in hand at Somerset next month to fuel their chances. The outcome was all the more remarkable as only 1. Gloucestershire had been held to a 2- 2 draw by Devon in Newton Abbot as they went on to pip our hopefuls by only two points in the 2. NFL on Yahoo! Sports - News, Scores, Standings, Rumors, Fantasy Games. The Associated Press•1. For one of those rare times, the focus at NFL stadiums was on what happened before the games. Instead, the league delivered some scintillating stuff punctuated by fantastic finishes in Detroit, Foxborough, Green Bay, Chicago and Philadelphia. Following two weeks of, well, blah, the NFL gave us WOW.
